I’m 72, and I Saw a Woman My Age in a Swimsuit, Sh0wing Off Her B0dy at the Beach. Should She Be More Modest at This Stage of Life?

Yesterday, I went to the beach, a place of relaxation and fun, only to be met with a sight that left me pondering what’s truly appropriate for our age. I saw a woman, likely around my age, confidently strolling along the shore in a revealing swimsuit, her body on full display as if she were decades younger. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of discomfort—aren’t there certain expectations when it comes to how we present ourselves as we grow older?

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely admire confidence. At 72, I still feel young at heart and try to maintain a sense of vitality in my own way. But, as I watched this woman confidently embrace her appearance, it made me question the balance between self-assurance and modesty, especially as we age. Isn’t there a time when we should consider dressing a little more conservatively, embracing grace and elegance rather than showing off every curve?

Compelled by my thoughts, I decided to approach her—after all, I thought I might be offering some gentle advice. I suggested that perhaps a more modest swimsuit choice would be more fitting for someone of our age. To my surprise, she simply laughed. No offense taken, no defense offered—she seemed to brush off my comment with ease, as if it hadn’t even registered.

I was left standing there, slightly taken aback. Here I was, attempting to offer what I thought was friendly advice, and yet it didn’t seem to matter to her at all. The whole encounter raised an important question: Is there really a “right” way to dress as we age? Is modesty a sign of grace, or is it simply an outdated notion?

There’s something about flaunting everything—whether it’s on a beach, at a party, or in public—that feels, to me, out of place when you’re in your 70s. Maybe it’s the societal norms that we grew up with, the values that were instilled in us about dignity and modesty as we aged. Or maybe, it’s the way we associate youthful exuberance with freedom and self-expression, and growing older with the idea of refinement and maturity.

But maybe I’m just being old-fashioned. Maybe, in today’s world, age is no longer a boundary that defines what’s appropriate or not. This woman’s confidence in her swimsuit, despite her age, might actually be a reflection of modern values—values that encourage us to embrace our bodies at any stage of life, to feel proud of who we are, and to never let age limit us.

In truth, we each should be free to wear whatever makes us feel confident and empowered. Maybe the real moral here is that there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to how we should dress as we age. What feels right for one person might not for another, and that’s okay. Our choices are a reflection of our personalities, our comfort, and the lives we’ve lived.

So, what do you think? Should there be an age when we let go of the notion of dressing for our age and just embrace whatever makes us feel good? Or is there still a place for modesty and grace as we grow older? It’s a question worth contemplating, and one that might not have a definitive answer. In the end, it’s all about finding the balance between confidence, self-expression, and respect for the stage of life we’re in.
